To begin any sort of planning project, you need establish objectives. In 2003, Commissioners initiated a subarea plan for Fidalgo that seemed to fall short of resident hopes and needs. Meanwhile, South Fidalgo continued to grow, and projections show more change is on the way. What are residents' objectives for the future? Fidalgo Island's population grew by 23 percent between 1990 and 2000; what will it be like 20 years from now? The strategic vision process will help determine the answer.

Skagit County commissioned Studio Cascade, a Spokane-based planning firm to prepare a "strategic vision" study for the South Fidalgo area. The firm will lead a process including public meetings, mailings, e-mail newsletters, participant exercises, and this project website to enable residents to weigh in on plan ideas. When complete, the study will fom the basis for a new sub-area plan for South Fidalgo - the key to meeting the area's long-range needs while maintaining Island quality of life.
